Q1.Tell us something about yourself
By now I had given a bit more than a couple of interviews and I had realized how this is a very important opportunity to tell them everything you want them to know, so I did. (Do let me know if you get a call for IIMs & you don't know how to answer this, I can help)
Q2. More about my job role and responsibilities
I again told them everything and additional things I learned during the course of my employment.
Then, I was asked if I knew maths. For which I said yes, it is definitely a subject I have spent most of my time practicing as compared to any other subject. And I should have seen it coming but I didn't. They started asking me questions about calculus and graphs. Now given I had a math background and loved both these topics I was able to answer a bit, but it had been 6 years, so I won't say I am proud of it.
Q3. Is y = |x| continuous?
Q4. Is y = |x^2| continuous?
Q5. Are continuous functions differentiable?
Q6. What is the differentiation coefficient of log(x^2)?
This was a nostalgic section for me. I gave logic where ever I knew. But I know I had goofed up between the graph is continuous and differentiable. And I was desperately looking for a comeback. (There were a couple of more questions here, I can't recollect, they were based on my response)
Q.7 (Last question) It was a long question, there was a buildup to reach the actual problem. I will cut directly to it, making it sound very simple: There is a room, in it, there is a fly. Distance of the fly from two adjacent walls and one of the top vertex was given and I was asked to calculate the distance between the fly and the roof.
I asked if I can use a pen and paper they said, by all means. And though normally it would have taken half the time, the nervousness of early goof-ups made me be way too conscious and I took my time. When I gave the answer, It was probably visible on my face how anxious I was.
Hence the professor said, it's correct only. Don't worry, it is the right answer. And there it was my redemption! After which I was feeling much better they asked if I had any questions. And I did, so I asked. It was about IIM Lucknow having a Delhi campus, the SM Course. We ended up talking for 5 more minutes on it. No doubt this was the best panel I met. They were nice and supportive throughout the interview.
I look forward to meeting them face to face once college starts.
Note: It may happen that given it was an online thing you won't understand what the other person is saying, so many factors like noise. In such cases do not worry and politely ask to repeat. And make sure you have a UPS setup with your wifi router so that there is no power cut during an interview. All the best.
