The clothes we wear have an indirect yet subtle way of impacting the way we feel. Certain clothes can make you feel more confident and have an impact on your mood. I personally believe the notion that dressing well and comfortably can make a person more likable and charismatic. The reason why I so strongly support this notion is because I have noticed the difference in me ever since I started paying more attention to the way I dress.
In my college days, I did not pay much heed to the way I dressed or what was in style. But, once I entered the corporate world, I realised the importance of smart dressing. I did not own any formal clothes and hence had to buy a whole new wardrobe before I started my first job. For this I went to the mall and perused many stores before I landed in Allen Solly. I was in search for a very specific type of blazer that would suit my body type and had almost given up hope before I landed up in the Allen Solly store. In that store I found exactly what I was looking for readymade with the perfect size and fit. An hour later, I walked out of the Allen Solly store overjoyed and content because I had found majority of my new wardrobe at their store within my budget. I was a whole new person in those clothes. I felt more confident and felt comfortable. Two years later, I wore the same blazer to my B-school interviews and now finally at B-school I wear the same blazer to all official events and interviews with the same level of comfort.
ABG is India’s third largest conglomerate and has proved their mettle by being one among the Fortune 500 companies. ABG, through their one brand- Allen Solly, has had quite a significant impact on my life. In the past, unknowingly I have used various products of theirs as I am sure many of us have. Maybe our house/office/college building is built using ABG ‘s cement, maybe the fabric our clothes are made of is produced by ABG, maybe the people we speak to over the phone use ABG’s network. ABG has a product for every consumer, from food wrappers to cement and telecommunications. In some way or the other, ABG has played a role in every Indian's life.
How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambitions in life so far
One of the most significant challenges I have faced was when I had to convince my parents to let me shift from Science to B.B.A after 12th grade. My parents, like most Indian parents, dreamt of their only child becoming a doctor or engineer. I was trained all my life to focus on science and aim for top colleges in the field. For the longest time, even I was convinced that I was interested in Science, but in 9th grade when we were asked to choose a sixth subject from options like home science, physical education, etc, I had chosen to take up commerce.
The next 2 years I was given an introduction to the world of business and I was totally hooked. I was more interested in that subject than any of my science subjects. I tried to persuade my parents to let me take up commerce in plus two but they were not convinced. So I ended up taking science for the next two years and did not really enjoy studying the subjects. I felt like I was forced into something I was not meant to do. I couldn’t imagine building a lifelong career around a field I had no keen interest in. So during those two years, I did everything I could to convince my parents and other family members to let me follow my interest and try my luck at commerce. After a lot of persuasion, I managed to convince my parents to let me pursue B.B.A in my under graduation. I was extremely scared because I was on my own in making this decision and had to follow through on my promises. I had to prove to my family and to myself that me straying off the pre-decided path would pay off.
At the end of 3 years, I had performed very well in B.B.A and also secured a coveted job at a Big 4 through campus placements. Now, I am furthering my ambitions by joining a top B-school for M.B.A and will continue making new goals and working towards fulfilling them. The greatest validation of all was my parents realizing that the choice I made was a good one and finally supporting me in my ordeals. I am most proud of this choice of mine as I knew exactly what I wanted and did everything in my power to remain on the track I felt was right. I couldn’t have imagined my life turning out any other way and I am glad I took the risks that I did.
