“If you can dream it, you can do it”
I belong to a family and culture where importance to skills of carrying out business is given more importance than education. I belong to Gujarat where having your business is preferred over being an employee. We had a family business of Diamond trading and brokering and my father and grandfather were keen to get me into it and bring an end to my further education after 12th (which they have decided during my 10th as my mark sheet were not as appealing as it should be). I was majorly engrossed in extracurricular activities, much into Sports, as far as I remember I use to play all the sports in the school and that too fairly well.
However, as the time came near to select stream for 11th and 12th, I was keen on taking Science with Biology as majors. Nevertheless, my family had planned something different they wanted me to take commerce and go ahead with their plan. I being naive stood firm for my plan, they gradually agreed for further study after 12th but only option given was Chartered Accountant(CA), but I wanted to be a Doctor (with no reason why). I did not agree to the proposal and the rift continued for few days and at last I did what I wanted going against everyone accompanied by harsh words that are difficult to forget till today.
The classes for 11th started, but things were different this time, I had to prove myself. I started studying long hours and dropped all the sports and extracurricular activity and performed exceptionally well by standing at 3rd position in class in 1st term exam. This helped me to reduce the rift between my father and me and get back to one of the sport that was Cricket. But soon after going with my plan, I realised I have done a huge mistake by staying in the ICSE board as the seat coverage was very low and I was not in position to pay heavy fees of private colleges.
In the meanwhile, I had identified that I was very much interested in Management and Business (but not at all in Diamond). The performance got better and better and helped me to get good percentage in class 12th and opted for Information Technology (which was my 2nd favourite field) after class 12th instead of Medicals. I started working hard there too as I had to prove my decision of switching of fields, I also started taking home tuitions and prepared for CAT. At the end I achieved Silver Medal in Information technology which I would not have imagined looking at my mark sheets of class 9th. Today my family is proud of me and supports in every decision I take.
