Own your Project: Once you are allocated your project and your mentor, take the project completely as your responsibility.
Divide your project into small and doable parts by charting an entire timeline. This is to ensure that you finish the project on time. Keep your slides updated constantly whenever you receive new information and be in a close loop with your mentor.
Be sincere: Be sincere in all the tasks that you do as an intern. Take your job very seriously and deliver results. This is an indication of your enthusiasm for the project.
Ask (Intelligent) questions: If you are to learn from scratch, it is essential to seek information from various possible areas. Ask questions that communicate that you want to seek a deeper understanding of your project and offer your time to gather the solutions.
Take Followups: Always keep your mentor updated on the progress and take follow-ups so as to stay on track.
Be a part of the team: A lot of projects require extensive teamwork. It is, however, easier said than done. While doing your project, make sure that you also look out for your teammates and help them in whatever possible manner. Do not hesitate from asking for help whenever you need it. Most importantly, do not shy away from voicing your opinion while being a part of the team.
The truth is that as an intern there is not so much that you can be judged for based on your project. However, you are being judged for your learning curve and growth. In this sense, a summer internship becomes a trial period for the company to closely monitor your work ethic and behaviour and monitor if you will be a good fit for the company.
The most important tip, however, is to talk to your seniors as they are a storehouse of knowledge and can give you first-hand advice on how to make the most of your internship.
Getting a PPO might seem essential, however, it is also important to enjoy your internship. If you really enjoy your work, the chances of getting a PPO increases multifold.
Consider your internship as a great learning opportunity that would help you as you progress through your professional career. Learn as much as you can, but don't forget to have fun during the process.
