Set 1-HR based questions
Set 2-Domain specific
Set 3- Current affairs
HR Questions
These questions are of the utmost importance since they will set the pace of your interview and how it eventually will turn out for you. Know thyself!! It is very crucial to know about oneself because in most of the interviews the first question you would face would be – Tell me something about yourself? and with the answer to this question, other questions would be asked and with the answer to this question, other questions would be asked.
Basically, it is at the candidate’s disposal to drive the interview and how adroitly you will do that, would depend on your preparation. Following are some commonly asked HR questions in IIM interviews:
1) Tell me something about yourself?
2) Why MBA?
3) Which calls do you have and why this college specifically?
4) What are the significant achievement and failures in your life till date?
5) What are your long term and short term goals?
6) Tell me something about yourself which is not on your CV?
7) What are your hobbies and interest? (If you happen to be an avid reader like me then prepare 2-3 summaries of your recently read / favorite books)
8) Why do you have mediocre marks in undergrad (If at all you have low marks in the undergrad or in a particular subject)
Domain-Specific Questions
For domain-specific questions, one must prepare 2-3 favorite subjects from under graduation so that you would be able to answer in a finer way and with confidence. For example: if you are a Mechanical Engineer, it would be obvious that you would know the Laws of thermodynamics or if you are an economics graduate then about fiscal deficit and etc.
For people with work-experience, one must know about all the projects one has mentioned in the CV or SOP and one must be able to explain one’s work to the interviewer in the simplest of manner.
Current affairs Questions
Most of the time, questions are asked on current affairs, most of the people like me who find it difficult to read the newspaper on daily basis find it difficult to recall the answers to these questions during the interview. However, you don’t have to struggle so much, you just make a specific diary and keep noting all the current events happening nationally and internationally. Every time you come across news which you think is relevant and can be discussed in the interviews, you should keep a note of it.
Apart from this, one must know about how GDP is calculated, What is inflation, how much budget is allocated, and answers to some general questions. It is always good to know more even if we are not asked about it, it will always be useful in some of the other manners.
In the end, one of the most important things to carry is confidence and a smile.
It is not your aptitude but the attitude which defines your altitude.
All the best to all the candidates who would be appearing for PIs, May the odds be in your favor!!!
