DoMS-IIT Chennai
The Department of Management Studies, IIT Madras, also known as DoMS, IIT Madras is a business school under the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai. This b-school came into existence in April 2004. Even though IIT Chennai is well known for B.Tech programmes but now their management program is also coming out to be very successful.
Admission Process
Regular Candidates
- DoMS consider candidates with a valid CAT score conducted by IIM.
- Along with CAT score, it calculates composite score considering past academic performance, work experience, diversity, gender.
- Candidates shortlisted based on the composite score are called for the personal interview to a given location.
- The final selection is based on the written ability test (WAT), personal interview (PI) and composite score.
- Graduates (from a university recognized by UGC) in any discipline with first class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) earned in their degree.
- IIT Graduates who have obtained a CGPA of 8 and above on 10 are exempted from CAT score.
Sponsored Candidates
Company sponsored candidates:
- It considers candidates with a valid CAT score conducted by IIM.
- Graduates (from a university recognized by UGC) in any discipline with first class or 60% marks earned in their degree.
- The candidate is to be sponsored by their employers and forward their application through proper channel.
- It also requires work experience of two years in the sponsoring organization.
Defence Personnel
- The defence personnel are exempted from the national level entrance test. They should apply through respective government agencies.
- Graduates (from a university recognized by UGC) in any discipline with 55% marks earned in their degree.
DoMS-IIT Roorkee
The Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee, also known as DoMS, IIT Roorkee is a business school under the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. This b-school was established in the year 1998. It offers dual specialization in 2-year MBA programme.
Admission Process
- DOMS also consider candidates with a valid CAT score conducted by IIM.
- For the final merit list of candidates, it considers the aggregate performance in CAT percentile, Group Discussion, Interview and Work Experience.
The weightage of the above are as follows:
- CAT percentile: - 65%
- Group Discussion: - 10%
- Interview: - 20%
- Work Experience: - 5%
- General/OBC candidates must have at least 60% marks or CGPA of 6.0 at qualifying degree level, for SC/ST/PD category students it is 55% or CGPA of 5.50.
The above-mentioned criteria are same for regular candidates, full-time sponsored and foreign candidates. Some additional information mentioned below.
Sponsored Candidates
- The candidates must have minimum 2 years of work experience in a responsible position in a Registered Firm.
- The firm can be public sector or private sector but it should have a turnover of more than 5 crores for the last years.
- If recognized by an educational institution then it should be AICTE approved.
Current Batch Size
Batch size is another factor which is considered during the comparison among b-schools. A smaller batch size may give a feeling of more exposure compared to a large batch size. But large batch size also provides diverse networking not only on the campus but also outside.

Report for 2018
The placements at DoMS IIT Chennai witness a total of 27 companies to recruit from the campus. Some of the new entrants in the campus were Tech Mahindra, Al Mazroui, Centre for Development of Telematics(C-Dot) and Oyo Rooms. Some regular recruiters such as Google, Amazon, Cisco, Crisil, Mckinsey, Wipro, RBS, Dell, Virtusa, and Cognizant also participated in the recruitment process.
In the batch size of 51 students, 43% were offered PPOs. Out of 51 students, 31% were female students.
Based on the packages offered to the students -
Average CTC - 12.4 lakh p.a
Highest CTC - 17.50 lakh p.a
Top 10% average CTC - 16.63 lakh p.a
Summer placements 2018
The batch consists of 65 students with 35% female students. 46% of the batch got a stipend of Rs.75,000. Top 20% of the batch got a stipend of Rs.100,000. The roles were offered in the areas such as Business Analytics, Finance, Information System and Operations.

Summer placements 2018
The Summer Internships occur at the end of the first year in the month of November. A total of 61 recruiters participated in the internship selection process making 99 offers to a batch strength of 82 students. The major recruiters were Trident Hotels, RBI, Bosch, CocaCola, DTDC, EY, Intel, Idea, HP, Airtel, Redbus, TATA and SBI.
The highest stipend offered was INR 80,000 and the average stipend offered was INR 32,060.
Report 2017
The placement at IIT Roorkee witnessed participation of 26 companies this season. More than 97% of the batch was placed during the first phase of the placement process. Some of the top recruiters were Vedanta, KPMG, Mazars, Cognizant, BristleCone, ICICI Bank, Kellton Tech, Fuzzy Logix, TCS and Analytics Quotient. In this placement season, 53 out of 57 students got placed with 3 getting PPOs/PPIs.

Curriculum
DoMS_IIT Chennai
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) at IIT Chennai is a two-year, full time, seven-quarter program. Each quarter is usually of eight-week duration. There is a summer project after the fourth quarter.
In each of the quarter after summer project, there are four electives, which gives a chance to students to get skilled in the field of their choice.
PGPEX-VLM
The mission of this programme is to develop future leaders for the manufacturing sector in India. It is a one-year full-time program. It is conducted jointly by 3 premier institutes of India i.e IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras.
The course has been designed by these institutes in consultation with industry, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Department Of Industrial Policy & Promotion: Government Of India and Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The only significant difference is that it requires an engineering degree. The program also gives an opportunity to do an internship with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Specializations
The different fields of specialization from DoMS include Finance, Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour (HRM & OB), Information systems, Integrative management, Marketing and Operations.
The b-school also provides different sub-choices related to each of the specialization mentioned above.
DoMS IIT Roorkee
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) at IIT Roorkee is a 4-semester program for two academic years. The first two semesters have 7 dedicated papers for the students. But in the 3rd semester, it offers 4 courses in areas of specialization and also provides summer training in this semester. In the 4th semester, there is a project work and 5 courses in area of specialization.
Specializations
The different fields of specialization from DOMS includes Operations management, Marketing management, Human resource management, Financial management, Information management, Technology management. It also provides various subjects in each of the categories mentioned above. It also provides an option of 10-12 open electives papers to the students.
Exchange Programmes
DoMS IIT Chennai
DoMS' management programs have received international acceptance. Visiting scholars from other countries, especially from Europe and USA, have preferred to spend a semester or two here working with DoMS. Some of the universities with whom it actively involves in exchange programmes are listed below:

DoMS IIT Roorkee
There is not much information available when it comes to Foreign Exchange program for students at IIT Roorkee, although they run some foreign language classes viz. German, French which provides a versatility of languages along with English.
Life On Campus
DOMS IIT Chennai
The life at the campus of DoMS IIT Chennai is quite exciting with different committees and clubs operating in the campus.
The committees like WebOps ensures the presence of DoMS over the web by broadcasting news, information and happenings of the department.
MILS (MBA Invitation Lecture Series) is also a program through which eminent business leaders are invited to share their own experience and give lessons of learning to the students. There is also sports and cultural committee and Sangam which is a platform for research scholars.
The b-school has clubs for different sectors such as Finaddict(Finance club), MarkIIT(Marketing club), OperaClub(Operation and Supply chain club), Synfosium(Consulting and strategic management).
DoMS IIT Roorkee
The campus life at DoMS IIT Roorkee seems to be much more exciting with numerous activities going inside the campus.
The department has separate committees for placement, media, newsletter, sports etc. They also publish DoMINATION (official magazine of DOMS). Like IIT Chennai it also has dedicated student clubs such as Vittarth (Finance club), MarkIIT (Marketing club), OperaZiONE (Operations club), E-Cell (Entrepreneurship club) etc.
There are also numerous annual events inside the campus. Some of them are Avenir (Annual business conclave), Confluencia (Annual management symposium), Regalia (Annual alumni meet), Thomso (Cultural Festival) etc.
The overall conclusion can be drawn that both the institutes are among the best of tier-2 b-schools. Even though the DoMS IIT Chennai has better stats but DoMS IIT Roorkee has better networking opportunities, which can be attributed to its relatively larger batch size. Also, the lifestyle inside the campus seems to be more interesting at Roorkee than in Chennai, with more activities running throughout the session.

Data not accurate for IT Roorkee; they have not released separated DoMS Placement stats. And how the hell can you come up with Top 50% batch having same avg CTC as average for whole batch ? Corroborate facts please. Numbers are way better; also a firly large cluster of students opt out- again not covered. The opting out %age is pretty high at both campuses.

As for Exchange, IITR DoMS does have one, and yet again they do not release data(as an IITR alumnus from their B.Tech programme I can confirm that exchange does occur, and a good chunk of batch gets converts- whether they leave or not varies year-on-year).
