The idea of a company which can produce such a mind-blogging variety of goods and services is unimaginable. We are talking of a family managed company which is managing and vertically integrating 30+ industries. How many global “Fortune 500” companies can manage that in a single market?
ABG has been a big inspiration for me. Starting from the 1850s, when ABG was started by Mr. Ghanshyam das Birla during pre-independence times and further strengthened during the new economy of the 1960s by the enterprising Mr. Aditya Vikram Birla, ABG has grown by leaps and bounds. It is now a $ 44 Bn business conglomerate listed in the Fortune 500. It showcases how an enterprising human being can find opportunity during the tumultuous winds of change and change the fate of a country.
For me, ABG, especially its Asset management division (Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company) under ABCL (Aditya Birla Capital Limited) is the company that I would like to work for, as it manages ₹ 3Tn of assets and is one of the biggest NBFCs in the country, providing ₹600Bn to the housing sector.
How I overcame my challenges
I was born in the small town of Siliguri in West Bengal. We located to Lucknow since my father worked in RDSO division of Indian Railways. I lived in the picturesque community of RDSO in the government quarters and have since developed an innate love for nature.
From as far as I can remember, I used to be bullied all the time, sometimes for being too nerdy or sometimes just because of my unbalanced physical structure and personality. (I was physically intimidating but at the same time my behavior was construed as too “gentle” by my school buddies.)
Time went on. I was athletic during my early school years but as the boards and intermediate exams approached, I had gotten myself into a very inactive and sedentary lifestyle. Slowly, I began to feel insecure about myself. I felt I was missing out on something. Then I slowly began running, then self-taught martial arts, then finally powerlifting. I finally found something to perform as a practitioner which tells you your real worth and the simplicity and minimalism you can bring to your life with the right physical regimen.
Doing so eventually made me stronger and the benefits continued well beyond just physical well-being; I could feel more confident about myself and how I perceived the world. Balancing both studies and powerlifting was difficult initially but slowly I found a balance between both and have reasonably excelled at both, winning a Bench Press Competition and making it to one of the Indian Institutes of Management.
